Filming Venice.
Re imagining the narrative of the city

A free workshop open to the entire community to share the research we are conducting at Ca’ Foscari on the power of images in shaping the idea of Venice. We investigate the dominant stereotypes, but even more, we aim to create new visual narratives of the city by placing the gaze and imagination of its inhabitants at the center.

Filming Venice. Re imagining the narrative of the city

A workshop of participatory video open to citizenship

In the summer of 2023, five sessions were held for a collaborative project, focused on the active participation of residents and an invitation to reclaim the images and imaginaries of the places they live in, through videomaking.

Filming can also become a way to reclaim the city. We therefore invite residents to "film Venice," seeking alternatives to the conventional and stereotypical visual narrative of the city as an artistic destination.

Starting from the insights of the Ca' Foscari research group on tourist stereotypes, participants were guided by filmmaker Raffaella Rivi through small exercises to acquire filming skills and techniques, ultimately working together to create a short film. No prior technical expertise in video production was required to participate.

The first edition of the workshop, concluded in the summer of 2023, was presented to the public with the screening of the short film Schedario Veneziano
The second edition of the workshop took place and concluded in May 2024 with the presentation of the continuation of the short film Schedario Veneziano.

The workshop was held in cooperation with the Ca' Foscari University Foundation and the Venice Foundation.
