Contarina S.p.a. is the company responsible for waste management in the 49 municipalities of the Priula Basin Council, in the province of Treviso. Its activities include the entire processing chain, from waste production to its treatment and recovery. For years, the company has been reflecting on the importance of minimising waste and recovering as much as possible. The SMATH project represented for the company a new level of contamination with the world of art, moving from the sphere of educational projects to a deeper reflection on its own identity and work.

From the meeting with Kensuke Koike, a contemporary visual artist, emerges a response to the company’s need to represent and communicate more effectively the great value of its business and the processes that have enabled it over the years to position itself at the top of Europe in terms of efficiency and environmental protection. The ‘Mine’ installation visually concretises the path taken by Contarina, taking the shape of the mountains of waste that characterise its plant and placing them in a different context. The work recycles and reuses an aspect of the company’s daily reality, helping it to reflect on itself and communicate, while initiating a dialogue on the theme of eco-sustainability.
