A participatory artwork in the production spaces of the IRINOX factory

Irinox is a leading manufacturer of blast chillers and high-quality preservation systems for the professional and domestic sectors, as well as stainless steel switchboards. A journey of more than 20 years made of successes, innovations and moments that have marked cultural and technological advances; a company that has always been sensitive to contemporary artistic languages, beauty and creativity considered true engines of stimulation of lateral and innovative thoughts.

Thanks to the PIC project, and the strategic vision of Vice President Katia Da Ros, the company hosted artist Matteo Attruia in residence. The latter was able to return, through his personal poetics, the work of art WONDER WILL.

A small, but decisive, variation of the well-known WONDER WHEEL inscription on the Wishing Wheel of Coney Island in New York thus becomes an opportunity to reflect on the importance of sustainability and climate neutrality and on the desire for a wonderful future that is linked to the will of people to make it happen, but also to the collective effort needed to make it happen.

Reproducing it in the same proportions as the original is a homage that allows the appropriation of a strong iconography, as well as the message it intends to convey well evoked by two strongly symbolic words that play on insinuating a grammatical doubt that does nothing but capture the observer’s attention and put him on a plane of reflection. The work, as the artist explains, ‘is a kind of warning, an invitation to individual action’, and its installation in the production spaces only confirms the shared ownership of this participatory work.

To make the work more participatory, we decided to involve the IRINOX workers and so each of the approximately 140 bulbs that illuminate and compose it, is also the container of an individual will expressed with an inscription directly on the glass: a single word. No constraints of meaning or language. In absolute freedom, each worker was asked to write it by hand. The work thus becomes, in its attempt to be observed on a daily basis, also a kind of invitation to individual action.

The identification of the exhibition site, the IRINOX production, is itself, thus, a part of the realisation project. And thus becomes a window into that will, even if only for an instant during the working day. The work belongs to all those who have contributed to making it unique with their own written expressions.
